Before recording an important project in AV1, take a short file through import, playback, editing and export on the actual system. Successful playback in a web browser does not establish compatibility with your editor or its hardware-decoding path.

Use a complete test card
| Field | Example of the information to record |
|---|---|
| Source | AV1 inside the actual MP4 or MKV produced by the recorder |
| Picture | Resolution, frame rate, bit depth and color tags |
| Audio | Codec, sample rate, channel count and track layout |
| Environment | Editor version and edition, OS, CPU/GPU and driver |
| Result | Import, timeline playback, proxy generation and final delivery separately |
AV1 is an open video codec with its own bitstream and container-binding specifications. Those specifications do not mean every application implements every import or export path. Check current vendor documentation for your exact application, not an old compatibility table copied between blogs.
Run the minimum useful trial
- Record two minutes containing motion, text, dialogue and a visible sync reference.
- Import the original file and scrub near the beginning, middle and end.
- Add one ordinary title and your usual basic correction.
- Generate a proxy if that is part of your planned workflow, then verify its attachment.
- Export the destination codec you actually need and play the result in the intended destination.
- Reopen the project after closing the application and confirm that media paths remain valid.
Plan a fallback before a long recording
Keep an alternative recording profile that you have already verified. A transcode can be a practical fallback, but it consumes time and storage and may change metadata or audio behavior. Run a short transcode test before you rely on it during a deadline.
What not to infer
An import success is not a playback-speed benchmark. A hardware encoder checkbox is not proof that the source is being hardware-decoded. A platform accepting the uploaded output does not prove that collaborators can open your source. See controlled encoder comparisons and project interchange.
Sources and scope
This is a documentary guide and a proposed decision method, not a hands-on software benchmark. Sources were checked on October 6, 2026. Menus and capabilities can change with the application version, edition, operating system and hardware.
