A file extension is not a complete media specification. Record the codec, bit depth, chroma format, frame rate and color information, then check the exact editor, OS and hardware path.
Choose a media role
- H.264 vs H.265 — editing cost and delivery compatibility
- ProRes vs H.264 — when an intermediate solves a real problem
- AV1 workflow check — a complete import-to-delivery test card
Check each kind of support
Import, efficient decoding and export are separate capabilities. Successful playback in another application does not establish editor compatibility, and an encoder checkbox does not prove that the source is hardware-decoded.
Project exchange is another layer
Compatibility guidance is version-sensitive. Prefer current official documentation and a duplicate-project trial over a static table that leaves out edition, hardware or profile details.
