Practical calculator

Recording storage calculator

Plan multicamera media storage with complete copies, a free-space reserve and explicit bitrate assumptions.

Estimate storage for identical camera streams, then account for complete copies and space you want to leave free. Include audio in each camera’s rate. If cameras use different codecs or bitrates, calculate each group separately and add the results.

How the calculation works

Recorded GB = total Mbps per camera × hours × 3,600 ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000 × camera count × (1 + allowance / 100). Stored GB = recorded GB × complete copies. Planned total capacity = stored GB ÷ (1 − reserve / 100). A reserve of 20% means one fifth of total capacity remains unused.

Worked example

Two hours from three cameras at 100 Mbps each, with no added audio or overhead, produces 270 GB. Keeping two complete copies requires 540 GB. Leaving 20% of the capacity free raises the combined capacity plan to 675 GB. The default form uses different editable values; enter these values to reproduce this example.

Before using the result

Count the working copy as one complete copy. Two folders on one drive are two logical copies but do not protect against that drive failing. Allow separately for proxies, cache, graphics, project versions and deliverables. Advertised drive capacity and available formatted space differ; this calculator does not model filesystem overhead or drive performance.

Keep the source values with your project notes. A number calculated from an assumed bitrate or representative sample is only as useful as that assumption. Check a real file or measured export when a deadline, upload cap or storage purchase depends on the answer.
