Build the vertical edit for the frame people will actually see, then verify it in the destination app. A 1080 × 1920 canvas is a useful 9:16 working example; it is not a claim that every account, upload route or platform accepts identical settings.

Decide how the source fits
A landscape clip can be cropped to fill a portrait frame, fitted with padding, or reframed deliberately over time. Cropping may remove the subject or a demonstration’s essential detail. Padding keeps the source but reduces the picture area available on a phone.
| Choice | Use when | Check carefully |
|---|---|---|
| Crop to fill | The main subject can fit in a portrait window | Action near the left or right edge |
| Fit with padding | The whole source frame is essential | Text and fine detail at the smaller displayed size |
| Reframe over time | The important subject moves across the source | Jumps, cut boundaries and unnecessary motion |
Use geometry before guessing
For a 1920 × 1080 source cropped to a 9:16 frame, the exact full-height crop is 607.5 pixels wide. A centered crop starts 656.25 pixels from the source’s left edge and retains about 31.64% of its pixel area. These are geometric values, not integer editor settings; rounding and repositioning need a visual check. Try the crop calculator.
Make captions survive the interface
- Keep critical text away from interface controls and the bottom edge.
- Check the caption against busy and bright areas of the footage.
- Review it at a phone-sized display, not only in a large desktop viewer.
- Preview the actual upload before relying on a reusable safe-area guide.
- Check the opening frame and cover separately from the moving video.
Verify each destination
Use the platform’s current help and upload interface for its limits, rather than copying an old universal bitrate or duration rule. Check picture, sound, framing and captions after processing. Save a separate approved export for each destination if their presentation needs differ.
Changing the canvas does not repair lost detail or create a higher source frame rate. Preserve an editable project and a source-quality reference so later platform changes do not force you to edit from a recompressed upload.
Sources and scope
This guide gives shared framing and verification methods. It does not publish unverified platform bitrate, duration or upload-size limits. Sources checked October 6, 2026.
