Compare the same exported file in a controlled viewing path before changing the grade. A different-looking player does not by itself prove that the encoded pixels changed. Source interpretation, timeline processing, color tags and display behavior are separate parts of the problem.

Inspect the color chain
| Stage | Question |
|---|---|
| Source | Is the clip correctly identified as log, SDR or HDR? |
| Timeline | What working space and transforms are applied? |
| Export | What output space and metadata are written? |
| Viewer and display | How is the file interpreted and presented? |
Avoid compensating for one viewer by unknowingly changing the deliverable for everyone. Adobe documents differences between viewer gamma behavior and export behavior; matching a preview to one destination is a different operation from altering the encoded image.
Use a controlled comparison
- Choose a short sequence with skin tones, neutral areas, shadows and bright highlights.
- Record source interpretation, timeline space and output settings.
- Export a sample and reimport it into the project using the intended interpretation.
- Compare frames through the same viewing path and use relevant scopes where available.
- Check the same file in the destination player, noting any different display or color-management behavior.
- Change one stage at a time and keep separate sample files.
Keep SDR and HDR distinct
An HDR recording placed into an SDR delivery workflow needs deliberate handling. Tagging a file differently is not necessarily the same as performing the required image transform. Do not assume that a filename or a container identifies the intended display treatment.
Be cautious with a compensation LUT
A LUT suggested for an older application or one playback environment can introduce an unwanted transform in another workflow. Check what it changes and whether that change is appropriate to the actual delivery specification. Test on a copy, compare the exported samples and keep a reference.
Document the agreed viewing condition
When a client reports a mismatch, ask which file, application, device and display mode they used. Establish an agreed review path before chasing contradictory screenshots. Screenshots taken through different display pipelines are not a clean numerical comparison of the underlying video.
Continue with SDR upload settings and reference exports for handoff.
